PlasmoniAC: harnessing plasmons for neuromorphic computing

AMO is partner of PlasmoniAC, an EU-funded project that aims at realizing a radically new circuit-technology for neuromorphic computing based on plasmons.

PlasmoniAC responds to the pressing industrial needs for high-speed neuromorphic chips that are at the same time low-cost,energy-efficient and compact. Bringing together the expertise 10 partners from 7 countries, the project offers a unique chance for strengthening the competitiveness of European photonics industry and for putting European companies in world-leading position in the global neuromorphic and Deep Learning market.

The kick-off meeting took place on the January 21st-22nd, 2020 in Thessaloniki, Greece, in a highly inspiring atmosphere. With all members highly motivated, PlasmoniAC is now looking forward to the first results. The official press-release of the event can be downloaded here.

Grant Agreement 871391
Programme Horizon 2020 – Information and Communication Technologies: Unconventional Nanoelectronics
Duration 01/01/2020 – 31/12/2022 (36 Months)
Objectives
  1. To create a computationally-credible platform based on plasmonics with Nx100 Gb/s bandwidth, μm2-scale size and high computational energy-efficiency.
  2. To demonstrate a whole new class of plasmonic neurons for feed-forward and recurrent neural networks, using photonic for interconnection, plasmonics for computations and non-volatile memristor-based control of the neuron weights.
  3. To create a Deep Learning training-model suite tailored to the new neuromorphic plasmonic hardware.
