A new research group on Perovskite Optoelectronics

The exploration of novel materials for photonics and optoelectronics applications has long since been a major focus of research at AMO. Two classes of materials have attracted in particular attention: two-dimensional (2D) materials and perovskites. So far, most of the research on perovskites at AMO has been conducted by the Nanophotonic Group, but, given the growing relevance of the topic, a new group dedicated to Perovskite Optoelectronics has been funded in 2022. Leader of the new Perovskite Optoelectronics Group is Surendra B. Anantharaman, who has joined AMO in September 2022.

Dr. Surendra B. Anantharaman

On his background, Dr. Anantharaman has a PhD from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), and a post-doc at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, partly supported by a postdoctoral fellowship of the Swiss National Science Foundation. He has a broad expertize in the investigation of exciton and exciton-polariton dynamics in different materials, including perovskites, transition metal-dichalcogenides and hybrid 2D materials.  “I’m interested in understanding how these light-matter interactions can be used for next-generation optoelectronic devices,” says Anantharaman, “especially for light-emitting devices and energy harvesting systems.”

At AMO, Dr. Anantharaman is overseeing the projects on PERSEPHONe, HIPER-LASE and FOXES. In addition, he is also ramping up new projects on the synthesis and exploration of novel hybrid semiconductors for optoelectronics applications. Another focus – typical at AMO – is scaling: from lab-scale fabrication to wafer-scale integration. Dr. Anantharaman says: “We have several exciting projects already going on, but we are also always open to new collaborations for investigating perovskites, device engineering, and upscaling.”

“It’s a great pleasure to have Surendra in our team”, says Prof. Max Lemme, Scientific Director of AMO GmbH. “His expertize complements very well our research interests at AMO. I’m looking forward to many exciting projects and publications together.”
