AMO in PhotonMed: Innovation in Plasmonics and Silicon Photonics

On 28–29 October 2025, our colleague Omkar Bhalerao presented AMO’s latest results on bimodal plasmo-photonic refractive index sensors at the EPIC Technology Meeting on Photonics for Bio and Life Science Applications, hosted by CSEM in Neuchâtel and organized by the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC). The event provided an excellent opportunity to discuss next development steps and strengthen technical exchange within the PhotonMed project.

We are excited to continue contributing to the ChipsJU-PhotonMed project as part of a strong European consortium. At AMO, our role is to advance the co-integration of CMOS-compatible plasmonics with silicon nitride photonics, enabling highly integrated, compact, and sensitive refractive index sensors. Within PhotonMed, this technology directly supports the advanced biosensing concepts led by Bialoom, creating a tangible impact in medical diagnostics.

Beyond PhotonMed, AMO acts as an open innovation partner for companies and research institutions aiming to prototype, validate, and scale new photonic and microelectronic concepts. From early feasibility studies to pilot fabrication, we provide access to state-of-the-art cleanroom infrastructure and a multidisciplinary team with deep expertise in design, process development, and device characterization.

This collaborative model allows us to support applications across diverse fields:

  • Biosensing and lab-on-chip systems
  • Optical communication
  • Quantum photonics
  • Graphene electronics
  • Emerging neuromorphic computing architectures

We are always eager to explore new use cases where our technology can play a pivotal role.
