Visit of Prof. Erika Covi to AMO

7. July 2026

Following the International Conference on Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering (ICNCE 2026), AMO GmbH had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. Erika Covi from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) to its facilities in Aachen.

The connection between Prof. Covi and AMO dates back several years. Initial discussions began during the preparation of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre TRR404 Active-3D, involving institutions such as TU Dresden and RWTH Aachen University. Since then, Prof. Covi has continued her impressive academic journey, moving from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands to her current position as Professor at the Technical University of Munich, where she is advancing research in neuromorphic systems and emerging electronic devices.

During her visit, Prof. Covi received an extensive tour of AMO’s cleanroom facilities, gaining first-hand insights into the fabrication of our 2D-material-based devices—from individual chips to wafer-scale processing. The tour highlighted the technologies and expertise that enable AMO to develop innovative solutions for next-generation electronics.

Beyond the facility tour, the visit provided an excellent opportunity for in-depth scientific exchange. Discussions focused on the complementary research interests of both groups, particularly in the area of device-circuit co-design for neuromorphic computing. A key topic was how energy-efficient circuits based on 2D materials could be combined with Prof. Covi’s work on memristive synapses and neurons to create powerful and sustainable hardware platforms for artificial intelligence applications.

Bringing together expertise in device physics, device engineering, and circuit design is essential for advancing neuromorphic hardware. Prof. Covi’s visit highlighted the value of interdisciplinary collaboration and the exciting opportunities that emerge when complementary approaches are combined.

We thank Prof. Covi for the inspiring visit and look forward to exploring future collaborations and taking the next steps together.
