Education & Training

We foster the next generation

We see research not only as a means to generate new knowledge, but also to train the next generation of scientists and technicians. To this end, we are involved in numerous funding programs and collaborations.

We work particularly closely with RWTH Aachen University, especially with the Chair of Electronic Devices headed by Prof. Max Lemme. Together, we supervise master’s and bachelor’s theses as well as doctoral positions.

Internships and thesis projects

Students from universities and engineering schools can apply to AMO for internships and thesis projects. We offer a wide range of topics and activities in science and engineering. A background in physics, electrical engineering or materials science is an advantage, but students with other qualifications can also apply.

Students must be enrolled in a school/college throughout their stay at AMO and must provide a university/college acceptance letter signed by a representative of the university/college.

Students with a non-EU citizenship must be enrolled at a school/college in Germany to receive proper immigration status.

On the way to a doctorate

“Modern high-power laser systems are complex and require highly skilled specialists to optimize their development and to implement innovative concepts. As PhD student at AMO, I optimize techniques for the fabrication of optical elements for laser applications, and I have the chance to collaborate closely not only with my colleagues at AMO, but also with our European partners in the project GREAT. Everyday, I learn something new and I get motivated by working in team with them.”

“My journey at AMO started October 2019 directly after my Master graduation, as I had the chance to work at AMO on something I was really looking for: a research project on a semiconductor technology with green applications, working in a full-equipped semiconductor fabrication lab and pursuing a PhD at the same time. As everywhere else, also at AMO there are times of struggles. Looking back, however, these struggles have helped me grown a lot as a scientist but also as a person. “Quantum technologies are extending our measuring capabilities beyond what has been feasible so far. Presently, I am working on QSPEC, a major project coordinated by AMO, where we are trying to develop a new kind of nanophotonic sensor for improved detection of food authenticity, with the potential of vastly impacting our daily life. Working at the intersection of quantum technologies and integrated photonics in such a fascinating and relevant project is exciting and fulfilling.”

“With 2D semiconductor materials, we can explore so many new possibilities for making smart devices! In my research, I am trying to use the atomic thickness of these semiconductors to make nanoscale flexible field effect transistors, which could be used in the electronic devices of the future. The daily challenges of process development are tackled with scientific rigour and passion in by our experienced cleanroom team. As a PhD student, it is very exciting for me to learn from such experienced colleagues and to be involved in the technological development of these highly advanced devices.”

Girls’ Day (& more)

Since 2002, AMO is taking part in the Girls’ Day, a nation-wide initiative aimed at motivating girls to take up professions that are traditionally chosen by man.
