Graphene Electronics

Graphene and other two-dimensional materials appeared on the stage first in 2004, raising great expectations that they could revolutionize microelectronics. These expectations were largely driven by the excellent intrinsic properties of graphene: high carrier mobility, broadband optical absorption, ultimate thinness, and high mechanical strength.

At AMO, we are doing research on graphene and other 2D materials for applications in microelectronics and optoelectronics since 2006. We are interest on the integration of two-dimensional materials with conventional silicon technology for applications in high frequency electronics, sensing and photonics, as well as in exploring applications of graphene in flexible and wearable electronics.

From single devices to integration

At the single device level, the Graphene Electronics group at AMO has already achieved a number of important milestones, realizing prototype devices that outperform their counterparts based on established semiconductors.
The next major challenge is the manufacturing of these devices at wafer scale and their integration in standard semiconductor process lines.

At AMO, we focus in particular on the integration of graphene on silicon platform. A first baseline process for fabricating back-gated graphene devices on 6-inch silicon wafers is in place since 2018, and available to our customers. The process is being further developed and expanded as part of the 2D-EPL project, and offered as multi-project wafer runs.

“One of the beauties of 2D materials is that they can be well integrated with standard CMOS technology. This means they can be used to expand the capabilities of silicon chips with additional non-digital functionalities – for example sensors, or photonic devices. The challenge is to find the right recipes to do so on a large scale.”

AMO is one of the founding members of the Aachen Graphene & 2D Materials Center, a center of competence built on the complementary expertise and facilities of Aachen’s leading research groups in the area of 2D materials.
