Sensor Technology and Energy Converters

Sensors play an unsung role in our information-based society. They are at the basis of many revolutions in the areas of safety-engineering, biotechnology, pharmaceutics and environmental technology, which all rely on the possibility of measuring accurately different physical quantities (e.g. acceleration, temperature, pressure, light intensity…), or of detecting and identifying quickly chemical and biological substances.

In the Sensor Technology and Energy Converters Group at AMO, we combine the use of innovative materials with the tailored design of the device architecture to develop sensors that are ideally suited to specific applications. We use advanced numerical simulations to support the design of our device and draw on the nanostructuring and replication capabilities of AMO’s cleanroom to develop next-generation sensors.

For a greener future

We also invest our expertize into environmental and energy-related projects, as the core of sensor technology is the ability of transforming one type of energy into another one that can be handled more efficiently – an ability which is crucial to tackle many of the problems faced by our society.

“Sensor technology is often about converting one form of energy into another, more usable one. I believe this is the technological solution to many current problems faced by our society. And this is what we’re working on.”
