PERSEPHONe: harnessing perovskites for integrated photonics
AMO GmbH is partner of the newly started training programme for young researchers PERSEPHONe (PERovskite SEmiconductors for PHOtoNics). Funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Programme with a budget of 3.75 million Euros, PERSEPHONe has the double aim of developing the technological basis of a novel photonic platform based on metal-halide perovskite semiconductors and, simultaneously, of training a new generation of researchers with top-notch skills in the field.
Metal-halide perovskite semiconductors are extremely versatile materials that present unrivalled optoelectronic properties and that can be engineered to achieve a large set of desirable functionalities. They also show great promise for integration with silicon and silicon-nitride-photonic platforms – what may change the roadmap of established photonic technologies.
Coordinated by IIT-Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Italian Institute of Technology), PERSEPHONe involves 12 main partners belonging to different sectors of R&D, academic and industry, such as Politecnico di Milano, Università Federico II di Napoli, Linkoping University, Universitat di Valencia, Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC), ETH Zurich, University of Oxford, AMO GmbH, IBM Research Zurich, Dectris and Helio Display Materials.
“This project aligns very well with our interests and expertise”, explains Dr. Piotr Cegielski, Senior Researcher at AMO GmbH. “One of the biggest challenges in the field of Nanophotonics is to develop on-chip light-sources for integrated photonic circuits. Metal-halide perovskites are some of the most promising materials for achieving this goal. At AMO we have already achieved important preliminary results in this direction; within PERSEPHONe we will explore the potential of the perovskites synthetized by our project partners to work as active materials for integrated lasers and amplifiers.”
The range of potential applications of the technology developed by PERSEPHONe is extremely broad, ranging from medical diagnostics to environmental monitoring, telecommunications and robotics. Apart for the technological aspects, a major focus of the network is on training of the early stage researchers. Thanks to the multidisciplinarity and intersectoriality of the consortium, the young researchers involved in the project will be exposed to a wide spectrum of technical expertise and experiences. This will allow them to start building their careers while having an impact on a relevant scientific and technological field. A double win to strengthen the innovation potential of Europe.
